Comments on the Award
Makoto Kubonouchi, President&CEO
I still remember how surprised and satisfied I was when Mr. Kamada proposed the package design.
The rebranding started in April 2018. Based on the designs and illustrations created by Mr. Kamada and Mr. Ogawa in the process of renewing our CI and VI, they expressed the identity of Kankyo Daizen on the package design.
When we received the package design proposal, I remember being astonished at the connection between CI, VI, and package design. I feel that Mr.Kamada expressed “Kankyo Daizen’s character” in various areas, including the development of applications and the selection of environmentally friendly products such as bottle materials and label paper, centering on the package design.
One of our customers happily commented, “Deodorant solutions and gardening materials, which play a supporting role in our daily lives and in some ways should be kept out of sight, have become a part of our interior design.
Kankyo Daizen are proud to have been recognized by the NY ADC, an international contest, and will continue to work hard to achieve our corporate slogan, “Keeping a close watch on Earth’s health.

■Mr. Junya Kamada, Art Director and Creative Consultant
The key point of the package design was to combine the contradictory qualities of “friendliness” and “cleanliness” with a “beauty” that would stand up to the demands of room decor.
In directing the illustrations, we worked to create a sense of transparency with an inherent sense of witty humor. The illustrator, Mr. Ogawa, successfully solved this difficult task. The illustrations were done in black and white, and the colors were added by us while keeping an eye on the overall balance. By limiting the number of colors, we created a color scheme that makes the colors seem richer than they are.
The bottles embody our slogan, “Keeping a close watch on Earth’s health,” and we have taken a variety of approaches, including the use of biomass bottles. The S series bottles, in particular, are designed so that when the shrink wrap is removed, a simple, high-quality bottle is revealed, which can be reused as a refill bottle.
We are very honored to have been recognized by the NY ADC, where designs from all over the world gather.
■Mr. Yutaro Ogawa, Illustrator
The illustration for the package was drawn while imagining a clean and airy space. For the S/D series, we came up with motifs and situations based on the theme of expressing without depicting people. For the H series, we discussed what kind of person, such as a haircut, we would like to see.
I also like the discreet earth icon and message that appears when the shrink is removed. We would be happy if an international award like this could be a catalyst for more people around the world to become aware of KIE~RU.
■About Kankyo Daizen Co.,Ltd Kankyo Daizen manufactures and sells deodorant solutions and soil conditioners by fermenting cow urine, which is unused biomass, with our own technology in Kitami City, Hokkaido, Japan. The products we manufacture are based on the concept that resources that are discarded or useless as they are regarded as “raw materials” and are upcycled by adding value to them and then used and returned to the earth in a cycle of recycling.
■What is the Upcycling Circulation System? Cow urine (The unused biomass), once a source of pollution, is used as a raw material to produce deodorant solutions, soil and water conditioners, which clean the air and regenerate the soil and water. This cycle not only circulates the local economy by purchasing cow urine from dairy farmers, but also allows consumers of the products to automatically participate in solving the environmental crisis, thus creating a cycle of goodness.
